Ulaanbaatar cityUlaanbaatar a name which literally translates to "Red Hero" or, serves as the lone hub for trips to most destinations within Mongolia. The city lays claim to the nation’s only International airport and the main station for its only international rail line the Trans Siberian/ Trans-Mongolia railway—which passes though the city from the north to south. With a population of just over 1 million according to latest estimate, Ulaanbaatar is the country’s economic cultural and political center, proffering a number of tourist attractions and the country’s greatest variety of entertainment. Ulaanbaatar is located on the bank of the Tuul River and surrounded by four sacred mountains, with dense pine forests on the northern slopes aiu l grassy steppes on the southern ones. Once described, as sunny, peace¬ful and Open, Ulaanbaatar still has sunny days, but a recent population boom has made it a busy and rapidly developing city. Livestock, once com¬monly seen in the city, are no longer visible downtown, but Ulaanbaatar is still defined by a contrast where modern life blends with Mongolian traditional lifestyle. Though tall offices and hotels increasingly characterize the city center, visitors in on the outskirts of town will not fail to notice thousands of traditional Mongolia gers and many temporary structures, which locals refer to as the “ger district”.
